close-up: Iron Curtain
Dimensions and Design
The Iron Curtain is an installation composed of two steel-framed segments, each showcasing about three miles of ball chain in 2886 individual 6’ long strands. Each segment stands at 118” long, 68” wide, and 88” high, including its plate footings. When placed end to end, the installation covers a footprint of approximately 6’ x 20’. The weight of the frames and chains keeps it steady on any flat surface, with no need for extra mooring.
Unique Features of Ball Chain
The ball chains boast remarkable qualities. The tiny, hollow steel balls dissipate heat and cold, ensuring the chains remain comfortable to touch, even in extreme temperatures. What's more, these chains are incredibly resistant to tangling. Unlike other materials, ball chains roll smoothly over one another, making the installation safe and captivating for all ages.
Proven Safety & Low Maintenance
Installed in various public spaces, including schools, the Iron Curtain has proven its safety. It requires minimal maintenance, whether indoors or outdoors. Two segments create an inviting space, encouraging social interaction and transforming casual strolls into spontaneous gatherings.
A Tactile Art Experience
At its core, the Iron Curtain challenges the traditional visual art paradigm. While its visual presence is striking, the true essence of the piece lies in tactile engagement. This installation invites you to experience art through touch, making every interaction a unique journey.
It’s tricky to take video of the ball chain in motion, because it overwhelms the camera. That happens to the eyes, too, it’s an overwhelm of the senses, the eye is not sure where to focus.
